Gauri Khan's Make-up

I got a request to do a breakdown of Gauri Khan's so here it is. I'm sorry I've been away for a while. I just needed to sort out a bunch of things but here I am back with a vengeance. Gauri's a bit too glowy for my liking so I'm giving you a more toned down version of her look. It's a lot more wearable and more subtle and I hope you like it.

Recommended Products:

  • LORAC Oil Free Luminizer in Pearl L1
  • Tinted moisturizer, concealor, and translucent powder of your choice
  • MAC Shroom to add punch to the browbone highlight
  • MAC Cork for deepening the crease
  • MAC Graphblack Technakohl
  • Maybelline Define-a-Lash mascara
  • MAC Dusty Rose blush
  • MAC Viva Glam V lipstick
  • MAC Viva Glam V lipgloss

Face:
You want your skin to look flawless and glowy so apply the concealor in thin layers. Be sure to apply concealor on your lids too. Then, mix the Lorac Luminizer with your tinted moisturizer and apply it all over the face. Touch up any spots with concealor if needed. Then set lightly with translucent powder. Your face should look luminous but not oily.

Eyes
Highlight:

Apply MAC Shroom on the browbone to enhance the highlight.

Crease:
With a crease brush, gently enhance the crease with MAC Cork.

Eyeliner:
Line as close to the top lash line as possible with the MAC Graphblack Technakohl and then line your lower waterline with the same pencil.

Mascara:
Curl lashes and apply one coat of a defining mascara such as the Maybelline Define-a-Lash mascara.

Cheeks:
Lightly dust MAC Desert Rose blush on the apples of the cheeks and blend towards the temple.

Lips:
Apply MAC Viva Glam V lipstick and top it off with the Viva Glam V lipgloss.

Make-up From the Sartorialist's Visit to India

I had a request for this look that was featured on the Sartorialist (always an awesome read by the way) and I have to add that whoever the person is in the pic pulled off the look so effortlessly. By far one of my favourite looks.

Recommended Products:

  • Tinted moisturizer, translucent powder, and concealor of your choice
  • MAC Photogravure Technakohl liner
  • Vasanti Magic World Eye and Cheek Putty
  • MAC Harmony. This and MAC's Sculpt and Shape are my go-to for contouring. Harmony makes an amazing contour on the cheeks.
  • MAC Stud
  • L'Oreal Panoramic Curl mascara
  • NARS Heatwave lipstick. This is an incredibly fitting lipstick for this look I think.

Face:
This look requires your skin to look natural and as unmade-up as possible. Apply an eye cream of your choice and apply a light tinted moisturizer instead of a foundation. If needed, cover up any problem areas with a concealor that matches your skintone. Set with a thin dusting of translucent powder.

Eyes:
The eyes are very subtle and I really doubt she's wearing any eyeshadow. Instead, tap on a highlighter like Magic World sheerly on your lids and a bit on your brow bone. Remember to keep it sheer and soft.

Brows:
This simple look really requires the brows to be groomed. Pluck away any stray hairs but be sure to keep the brows as full as possible. Enhance your brows with the Stud eyebrow pencil using short feathery strokes.

Liner:
If you know how to tightline, I would recommend doing that (I'll have a tutorial up of this soon). If not, line your top lid with Photogravure and keep the liner as thin and as close to the top lash line as possible.

Mascara:
Apply a coat of the L'Oreal Panoramic Curl mascara to the top lashes. Without dipping the wand in more mascara, use the remainder on your bottom lashes.

Cheeks:
Again, it looks like she's not wearing anything and is just blessed with great cheekbones (how do I send her hatemail?). If you would like to have some definition, you can contour your cheeks with a shade like the Harmony blush. I will have a highlighting/contouring tutorial of the whole face up soon if that helps. Meanwhile, I have a badly photographed contouring tutorial under the tutorial section.

Lips:
With a lip brush, carefully outline your lips with the Heatwave lipstick. Then, go in and fill lips with the same lipstick.

IIFA Looks Part 1: Shriya Saran

I guess I'm so used to Shriya being in Tamil movies so much I forgot she made a Hindi movie recently too. Or she might have many Hindi movies, not sure. Here is a breakdown of her look at the IIFA Fashion Extravaganza. It's a gorgeous look but personally I would have chosen a different blush. I feel it's much too warm for the colour palette her eyes and lips comprise of. I've offered a substitute that I feel would have balanced the tones better. Ignore it if I'm being pompous.

Also, I'm going to start off recommending you start doing the eyes first so that the flyaway shadows don't mar your foundation and concealor.

Recommended Make-up:

  • Concealor, foundation, and translucent powder that you love
  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • MAC Concrete eye shadow.
  • Maybelline Define-A-Brow Gel
  • MAC Nehru eye shadow
  • MAC Shroom eye shadow
  • MAC Smolder eye kohl
  • L'Oreal Voluminous
  • MAC Coppertone blush. Alternative: MAC Blushbaby
  • MAC Twig lipstick
  • MAC Soar lip pencil
  • Blistex or Carmex that comes in the tub.
Eyes:
Prep eyes for eye shadow with some Urban Decay Primer Potion.

Brows:
Shreya's brows are strong but not harsh. I recommend using Concrete to define eyebrows because it's a lot softer than black and doesn't make me look like I have an ongoing feud with everyone who has the power to dehair me. So dip a brow brush into the Concrete eyeshadow and with small strokes define your brows. Be sure to follow the natural shape of you brows. Set the brows into place with the Define-A-Brow gel.

Eyelid:
Use a patting motion to apply Nehru to your lids so you get the deepest version of the colour all the way up to the crease. I find that patting on colour intensifies the shadow instead of stroking it all over the lid. Blend the edges of the crease slightly towards the brow bone. With a pencil brush such as the MAC 219, blend out the shadow near the outer edge of the eye to make a wing towards the end of the eyebrow. Don't take the shadow all the way to the edge of the eyebrow and stop short of it by 1/2 to 1/3 (depending on the level of drama that you want) of the distance between the outer corner of the eye and the end of the eyebrow. Apply a medium-thin line of Nehru along the entire lower lash line.

Highlight:
Apply Shroom to your brow bone and blend into the crease.

Eyeliner:
Line the top and bottom lash line with Smolder. Make the liner on the top lid medium-thin and blend it into the Nehru eyeshadow. On the bottom lid, keep the liner thin and as close to the bottom lash line as possible and smudge into the Nehru that you applied on the bottom lid. For the finishing touch, line your bottom waterline with Smolder.

Mascara:
Curl lashes and generously apply two to three coats of mascara on top and bottom lashes. Use a lash comb to get rid of clumps.

Foundation:
Brush off any shadow fallout and start applying a medium coverage satin finish foundation. Then, conceal any problem areas. Set with translucent powder.

Cheeks:
Apply a sheer dusting of Coppertone on the apple of your cheeks and blend into the temple. I personally like Blushbaby better with this look as I find it fits the colour palette better. Again, just pretend that last line isn't there if you think I'm annoying.

Lips:
Line the rim of your lips with Soar and use a lip bush to blend the outline into the lips. Then, using the same lip brush, apply Twig onto the lips. Apply some balm if necessary. I find Twig's formula quite drying and it doesn't look like Shriya's wearing a high shine gloss, so I think my trusted Carmex or Blistex (the clear pot versions) would work wonderfully for this.

Light, Glowy Look for the Summer. It's Very Quick I Promise.

Alright, I admit I have a sleeping problem. I need to rectify that. From tomorrow onwards, I will not stay up all night doing... nothing. May the gods of sleep be with me from now on. But right now, I'm going to use this time for good. This is a look I do because I like an easy, glowy look in the summer. I love to glow, even though I'm an incredibly oily skinned girl. I think it's a nice look for a lazy dinner out on the patio with friends. I hope you like this look because it's a very simple one. I have a couple more complicated ones up next if you don't like this.

Tools Used:

  • MAC 129 powder brush. I used this for the highlight too. As long as you don't dunk it in highlighter I find it works well for both powder and highlighter.
  • MAC 217 blending brush to apply highlighter to my lids, browbone, and the bridge of my nose.
  • Fingers. I'm gross for dipping my fingers into a pot concealor.
Make-up Used:
  • Shiseido Translucent Powder.
  • MAC Studio Finish Concealor in NW35
  • Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Tawny used on lids and highlight
  • Bobbi Brown pot rouge in Pale Pink. You'll be surprised how beautiful it is as a blush on dark skin.
  • Bobbi Brown pot rouge in Velvet Plum
  • Blistex
  • L'Oreal Voluminous
Step 1:
If needed spot conceal problem areas on the face and use a tinted moisturizer. Then set with translucent powder. I wanted to let my skin show through and to really make it a quick look so I left it at translucent powder.

Step 2:
Conceal under-eye circles with the concealor of your choice. I just patted it on with my fingers. Set it with translucent powder.

Step 4:
Apply the Pale Pink pot rouge to the apple of the cheeks and blend to the temples. It's a surprisingly flattering pop of colour on my skin.

Step 5:
Pat on the Velvet Plum pot rouge to lips with fingers. It doesn't have to be precise and you don't want it to look like you put a lot of effort into it. You're basically trying to stain your lips with the lip colour. Even if you're using a similar coloured lipstick, try patting it on with your fingers to get a smudgey effect.

Step 6:
Apply blistex on top of your lip colour to give it a soft sheen and to keep lips hydrated.

Step 7:
Using the MAC 129 brush, dust highlighter lightly on the top of your cheekbones. Then take the MAC 217 brush and apply the highlighter to the center of your lids and blend out. Continue highlighting the brow bone, the bridge of the nose, and the cupid's bow.

Step 8:
Apply two coats of mascara to top lashes and one coat to bottom lashes.

Aishwarya Rai's Make-up from Cannes

I know you ladies requested a breakdown of Aishwarya's make-up at Cannes. Since Kohl Girl already did one on Roop Cafe, I decided to do a breakdown of another one of Aishwarya's look at Cannes. Here, Aishwarya has cool violet shadows on her lids, neutral lips, and a surprisingly warm blush.

Recommended Make-up:

  • NYC Translucent Powder
  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • Maybelline Define-A-Brow Gel
  • MAC Nocturnelle eyeshadow
  • MAC Shadowy Lady eyeshadow
  • MAC Shroom eyeshadow
  • L'Oreal HiP cream liner in Black
  • L'Oreal Panoramic Curl mascara (my newest love by the way)
  • NARS Gina blush
  • MAC Midimauve lipstick
  • Sephora Sugar 'n' Spice lip gloss
Face:
Aishwarya's look is glowy but not in a 'Shweta Salve's ode to the oil rig' kind of way. Rather, it's very subdued and so I really recommend applying a satin finish foundation to achieve a flawless base. I purposely don't recommend using a dewy finish because that would take away from the sophisticated feeling of this look. Keep the glow as the finishing touch.

Conceal problem areas and any under-eye circles with a concealor that matches your skin tone. Set with translucent powder.

Eyes:
A really good base is necessary for this look. I find that purples are tricky to wear if your lids have even a little purple in them naturally. Apply the Primer Potion on lids and pat it out.

Brows:
The brows should be very neat and manicured so tweeze away any stray hairs and set the brows into place with the Define-A-Brow gel.

Eyelid:
Apply Nocturnelle from lash line to crease.

Crease:
Define the crease with Shadowy Lady and blend mostly into the lid. Then, blend the shadow slightly outward from the crease. Do not bled too high up to the brow bone.

Highlight:
Apply Shroom on the brow bone and blend into the crease.

Eyeliner:
Apply the HiP cream liner along the top lash line. Start from the inner corners and thicken the line slightly while keeping it fairly thing as you get to the outer corners. Do not extend the liner past the outer edge. Line the bottom lash line but keep the line very thin and and as close to the lashes possible

Mascara:
Curl lashes and apply the Panoramic Curl mascara on both bottom and top lashes. It looks like Aishwarya is wearing false lashes, so if you'd like to create the same drama apply a full strip of natural looking false lashes.

Cheeks:
For a warm, peachy glow dust Gina on the apple of the cheeks and blend towards the temple.

Lips:
Apply the Midimauve lipstick on lips and top it off with the Sugar 'n' Spice lip gloss.

Overall Glow:
To get Aishwarya's covetous glow, apply the Glistening Flush highlighter on top of your cheekbones, (very lightly) on the bridge of your nose, on the brow bone, and cupid's bow. Blend out until you get her imperceptible glow.

Shalini Vadhera's Look for Emmanuelle Chriqui

Edit: I got an email with a breakdown of Emmanuelle Chriqui's look from a rep for Shalini Vadhera. I asked her to keep me updated with such breakdowns and hopefully I will get a chance to talk to her and bombard her with questions. And yes, I'm still trying to finish my huge 25-page long single spaced paper tomorrow (just reread the page length again and imagine what kind of a state I am in now). Also, it feels great not to be known as the 'crazy make-up breakdown stalker lady.' For once, I didn't hound anyone until they cried.

I know Emmanuelle Chriqui isn't technically desi, but her make-up would look beautiful on a lot of desi ladies. Also, she is of Moroccan Jewish ancestry. I guess if I can get asked what part of Saudi Arabia India is in, she can qualify for being brown too (I'm being sarcastic, but I have been asked this a few times).

As the weather warms up I am sure you’re considering makeup looks for spring & summer! Shalini Vadhera, celebrity makeup artist and author of Passport to Beauty, recently created a stunning beauty look for actress Emmanuelle Chriqui (HBO’s “Entourage”) before she walked the red carpet at a Beverly Hills event.

Shalini Vadhera calls this look "a chic, natural but sexy." Here's how to get the look.

Step 1:

Shalini prepped and brightened Emmanuelle’s skin with Global Goddess Beauty Upgrade Complexion Face Primer and then applied Complexion Perfection Foundation to give her skin a flawless finish.

Step 2:

South Pacific Shimmer Bronzer served a dual purpose as an eyeshadow base and to warm up her cheeks. It’s one of Emmanuelle’s personal faves!

Step 3:

The Sizzling Serengeti Tribal Quad Eyeshadows in Mombasa helped to make her eyes pop. A layer of black and shimmery brown Cairo Eyes Liquid Liner and Exotic Eyes Blackest Mascara set the look.

Step 4:

Lastly, Shalini applied Sandstorm Lip Veil to gloss up Emmanuelle’s lips and Floating Diamonds Face & Body Shimmer for an all-over glow.

Follow these simple steps and you too can achieve Emmanuelle’s gorgeous Global Goddess look!

To view the products listed, you can go to the Global Goddess website.

Great Make-up: Priyank's Simple Look

I got a request for a breakdown of Priyanka's look. I seem to have forgotten which exact breakdown was requested of Kajol's and Rani's so just remind me. I'm so sorry about my rather disorganized state.

Face:
This look requires a very minimal eye make-up and the cheeks are warm and tan. The lips are mauve-rose toned which is very unexpected. So when the skin is flawless, the various elements can come together. It sounds cheesy but it will make a world of a difference when your skin takes center stage. Make sure you moisturize your skin and under-eyes and then apply a medium coverage satin finish foundation. Conceal problem areas if necessary with a creamy concealor that matches your skintone. Apply translucent powder to set the make-up.

Eyes:
I checked this picture under various lights and have zoomed in another couple of hundred times. She doesn't appear to be wearing any shadow on her lids. It seems that foundation was applied on her lid. So do the same and pat some of your foundation from your lid to your crease and set with translucent powder.

Brows:
In keeping with Priyanka's minimal eye make-up, ther brows look flawless and frame her eyes beautifully. So pluck away any stray hairs and emphasize eyebrows with a deep brown eyebrow pencil. Remember to keep the brows as natural looking as possible and don't overdo the eyebrow pencil. Brush brow gel through your brows to keep them in place.

Recommendation: MAC Stud, Ardell Brow & Lash Growth Accelerator

Crease:
There's hardly crease definition here and if you choose to, you can skip this step. If not, apply a matte medium brown in the crease very lightly and blend outward.

Recommendation: MAC Cork

Highlight:
Apply a shimmery champagne on the brow bone and blend into the crease. It's going to lighten the area under the brows and emphasize the natural colour of the lids without being too obvious. If you don't want to use a shimmery champagne a good matte shadow will do the same trick.

Recommendation: MAC Ricepaper, Bobbi Brown Banana

Eyeliner:
This is where the emphasis of the eye make-up is. Use a black liquid, cream or gel eyeliner and follow the natural shape of the eye from the inner corner to the outer corner on the top lid. Increae the thickness of the liner as you go outward but be sure to not exceed medium-thickness when it comes to the line.

Recommendation: L'Oreal Hip cream liner in Black

Mascara and False Lashes:
Curl lashes and apply a volumizing mascara on top and bottom lashes. Brush out any clumps with a lash comb and add another coat. Make sure the lashes look plush and thick. For added drama, apply a full strip of false eyelashes.

Recommendation: L'Oreal Voluminous, Clinique Lash Building Primer

Cheeks:
Priyanka seems to be wearing a bronzer rather than a blush. Dust a slightly shimmery bronzer on the apple of the cheeksthe same way you would a blush and blend towards the temple .

Recommendation: Vincent Longo Copper Kiss Bronzer is amazing on darker skintones, Too Faced Carribean in a Compact in sun Bunny is beautiful on lighter to medium-dark ladies

Lips:
Apply a mauvey-rose lipstick to finish off the look.

Recommendation: I know I didn't have elaborate steps for this look because I can get the same look with MAC Cosmo lipstick alone.

Great Make-up: Deepika Padukone

I know this is a bit late with the look but here it is. I actually did this look on a friend and she really liked it. I hope you like it too.

Face:
Since everything is understated you want the skin to really make the look. Apply a medium coverage foundation in thin layers until you get a flawless finish. Building up coverage allows you to use the right amount of foundation necessary to make your skin look perfect. Conceal problem areas if necessary with a creamy concealor that matches your skintone. Apply translucent powder to set the make-up.

Eyes:
To keep the eyeshadows from creasing and disappearing, apply primer on the lids.

Recommendation: Urban Decay Primer Potion

Brows:
Deepika's brows are fairly thick, defined, and neat. So pluck away any stray hairs and emphasize eyebrows with a deep brown eyebrow pencil. I don't recommend using a black eyebrow pencil because I find that too harsh. Brush brow gel through your brows to keep them in place.

Recommendation: MAC Stud, Ardell Brow & Lash Growth Accelerator

Eyelid:
Apply a shimmery peachy gold from lash line to crease.

Recommendation: MAC All That Glitters

Crease:
You want to use a soft crease colour that's not too jarring and stark compared to the lid colour. Apply a medium brown shadow with gold shimmer in the crease and blend into the lid colour and towards the brow bone.

Recommendation: MAC Mulch

Highlight:
Apply a shimmery champagne on the brow bone and blend into the crease colour.

Recommendation: MAC Ricepaper

Eyeliner:
Keep your hand steady when applying liner as the entire top and bottom lash lines are lined but it is very thin. With a black cream or gel liner and starting at the inner corner of the eye, make a thin line and progress to the outer corner. Do this on the top and bottom lashes and connect the eyeliner at the outer corner of the eye.

Recommendation: L'Oreal Hip cream liner in Black

Mascara and False Lashes:
Deepika is wearing a full strip of false lashes. If you don't want to use false lashes, apply a primer and a volumizing mascara to give length and volume to the lashes. Comb out any clumps with a lash comb. For added drama, apply a full strip of false eyelashes.

Recommendation: L'Oreal Voluminous, Clinique Lash Building Primer

Cheeks:
The blush for this look is very delicate and soft so be very light handed when applying blush. Dip your blush brush into a soft peachy pink blush with light gold shimmer, tap the brush gently to get rid of the excess blush, and apply to the apple of your cheek and blend towards the temple. Remember, you can always build intensity so use a light hand.

Recommendation: NARS Deep Throat

Lips:
Apply a neutral, medium pinky nude lipstick and top it off with a soft apricot lip gloss.

Recommendation: for fairer skin tones I really recommend using MAC Hug Me (which I'm willing to bet my life was used on Deepika). If you're darker like me and get a bit too washed out if there isn't enough warm tones to a lipstick, I recommend using Prescriptives Bare Cream. Either way you get a very accurate interpretation of Deepika's lipstick when you use the gloss over it. MAC Love Nectar lusterglass.

Great Make-up: Kareena Kapoor at the Film Fare Awards

Here's the much awaited, much overdue breakdown of Kareena Kapoor at the Film Fare Awards this year. Thanks Mira and everyone else for helping me find the pics. I have a limited number of brain cells and even they seem to be dying.

Face:
This look calls for a dewy look and a medium coverage foundation. Cover up any under-eye circles or blemishes with a creamy concealor that matches your skin tone. I really like the look of foundation mixed with Strobe Cream (substitute with your favourite highlighter) to give a soft, halo-like glow. Set with a translucent powder.

Recommendation: MAC Strobe Cream, NYC Translucent Powder

Eyes:
To prime eyes for the shadow, apply an antique gold long lasting cream shadow on the lid. Blend outwards from the crease but do not extend out too much.

Recommendation: MAC Indianwood Paint Pot

Brows:
The brows for this look are natural and thick while being very groomed. Tweeze away any stray hairs but be sure to leave eyebrows as thick as possible while following the natural shape of your brows. Set brows with a brow gel.

Recommendation: Ardell Brow & Lash Growth Accelerator

Eyelid:
Apply a shimmery light yellow gold shadow on the lids.

Recommendation: MAC Gorgeous Gold

Crease:
Apply a deeper, golden peachy brown shadow in the crease and blend into the lid and slightly outwards.

Recommendation: MAC Amber Lights

Highlight:
Apply a very light, shimmery champagne shadow on the browbone and blend into the crease.

Recommendation: MAC Ricepaper

Liner:
With a very deep black kohl pencil, rim the entire top and bottom lash line. Keep the liner thin to medium in thickness. Smudge the liner slightly with a q-tip or a pencil brush such as the MAC 219 brush.

Recommendation: Revlon Colorstay Pencil Liner

Mascara:
Curl lashes and apply a volumizing mascara. Comb out any clumps with a lash comb.

Recommendation: L'Oreal Voluminous, Lancome Fatale

Bronzer:
Apply a plummy bronzer on the apple of your cheeks and follow through to the temples. Apply a very little bit on the bridge of your nose, forehead, chin, etc. Be sure to keep it very light because I tend to look muddy if I overdo it.

Recommendation: Benefit Dallas

Lips:
Apply a cinnamon pink lip liner and top it off with a sheer pinky caramel brown lipstick.

Recommendation: MAC Spice lip liner, MAC Honey Flower

Great Make-up: Shreya

I will have the requested breakdowns out in a few days. I'm sorry I'm so late with it, I've been so exhausted and tired that I cant seem to do anything. I stumbled across this pic of Shreya and I became obsessed with the make-up. Yes, it's insanely photoshopped and the blush is a bit too heavy for my liking, but you can alter this look slightly and I think it would look great.

Face:
Since we don't have Photoshop available to airbrush and filter our faces to death and because too heavy a foundation would make this look a bit tarty, start off with a light to medium coverage foundation with a dewy or satin finish. Cover any blemishes and under-eye circles with the concealor of your choice. Set make-up with translucent powder.

Eyes:
You're going to need primer for this one, I'll be frank with you. This look requires matte browns and to make them look their best a primer is absolutely necessary.

Recommendation: Urban Decay Primer Potion

Brows:
The look calls for the brows to be neat and very defined. Groom brows with a brow gel and emphasize them with a brow pencil. Pluck and stray hairs but be sure to not tweeze away too much.

Recommendation: Milani Eyebrow Pencil in Dark Brown, Ardell Brow & Lash Growth Accelerator

Eyelid:
Apply a matte, medium neutral brown eye shadow on your lids.

Recommendation: Bobbi Brown Sable

Crease:
Apply a a slightly darker matte brown shade along the entire crease and blend outwards.

Recommendation: Urban Decay Secret Service

Outer "V":
Apply a matte blalckish-brown eye shadow to the outer "v" only. Blend it into the crease colour so there is a subtle gradation of colour.

Recommendation: MAC Brun

Liner:
Create a medium thick line with a dark matte black gel or liquid liner following the shape of your eye from the inner corner to the very outer edge. Do not extend the liner past the outer corner. Line your lower waterline with a deep black gel or pencil liner.

Recommendation: Revlon Colorstay Liquid Liner, L'Oreal HIP Cream Liner in Black, Revlon Colorstay pencil liner

Lower Lid:
Dip a q-tip or a pencil brush, such as the MAC 219, in a matte black eye shadow and apply it to the lower lash line. Make sure that the line you make is thin but strong. Blend this out slightly so that the black eye shadow isn't as intense and appears smokey.

Recommendation: MAC Carbon

Highlight:
Apply a matte buttery shade on the browbone and blend into the crease.

Recommendation: MAC Brule

Mascara and False Eyelashes:
I have to be honest here. Mascara alone isn't going to get you the exact look. If you want to stick to mascara alone, curl lashes, apply a primer if you wish, and apply 2 to even 3 coats of a volumizing mascara on top and bottom lashes. Comb out any clumps with a lash comb. For added drama, apply a full strip of false eyelashes.

Recommendation: L'Oreal Voluminous, Diorshow mascara

Cheeks:
Shreya's blush is very intense and I really don't recommend it for real life. A softer version is to apply a candy pink blush with a bit of shimmer lightly on the apple of the cheeks all the way to the temples.

Recommendation: MAC Dollymix

Lips:
Apply a sheer plummy red lipstick and top it off with a neutral pinky red gloss
Recommendation: MAC Sophisto , L'Oreal Colour Juice in Candy Apple

Great Make-up: Trisha

I cannot for the life of me find a clear pic of Kareena Kapoor at the Film Fare Awards. If you know a link, please email it to me at anu@indianmakeupdiva.com. I'm not the most sophisticated net surfer. It's ok though, I make up for it with other positive talents such as... well... I'll get back to you on this.

This is a pic of Trisha at the 52nd Film Fare Awards. Her make-up is very low key and understated. The one thing I don't recommend that she does is to use a lighter foundation as her neck look too pasty compared to her arms etc and her hairline and face have a brown buffer zone. You know I need to make everyone's lives miserable because of this. However, this is a great, low-key look that you could easily wear every day.

Face:

Moisturize your face and under eyes with the cream and eye cream of your choice. Let it sink in for ten minutes. With a stipling brush, dot your face with a velvet finish foundation (I repeat in your skin tone) and then buff it in with a circular motion. The virtue of using a stipling brush is that it applies thin layers of make-up and so your make-up doesn't look caked on and very natural. Also, the end result looks very airbrushed and flawless. If necessary, conceal any spots, dark circles, and discolouration with the concealor of your choice. Dust translucent powder to set your make-up.

Recommendation: MAC Studio Fix Fluid, MAC 188 brush, MAC 187 brush, NYC Translucent Powder

Eyes:
Apply a primer on your lids to keep your shadow in place and make it as true to the pan as possible.

Recommendation: Urban Decay Primer Potion

Brows:
Since the look is very simple, groomed brows make this look. Tweeze any strays and comb brows with a spoolie brush. Although the brows are very groomed, they aren't overly darkened. So fill them in only where necessary and set with brow gel.

Recommendation: Ardell Brow & Lash Growth Accelerator

Eyelid:
Apply a peachy gold shadow from lashline to slightly above the crease.

Recommendation: MAC Honey Lust

Highlight:
Apply a shimmery, light peachy gold shade on the brow bone and blend into the crease.

Recommendation: MAC Ricepaper

Liner:
Take a deep, matte black liner in the formula of your choice and create a medium-thick liner from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner. On the bottom lash line, I recommend a pencil or gel liner to line the entire lower lash line and waterline.

Recommendation: Revlon Colorstay Liquid Liner, Revlon Colorstay Pencil Liner, MAC Blacktrack Fluidline

Mascara:
Curl your lashes to get maximum impact and coat with one or two coats of mascara on top and bottom lashes. If you have any clumps, comb them out with a lash comb.

Recommendation: Maybelline XXL mascara

Cheeks:
With a stipling brush, apply a peachy bronze blush very, very lightly from the apples of the cheeks to the temple. When I say apply lightly, I mean that the blush should be only very slightly more intense than barely noticeable.

Recommendation: MAC Peachtwist

Lips:
Apply a pigmented plummy brown lip gloss to finish the look.

Recommendation: Stila Brown Sugar Lip Glaze

Great Make-up: Madhuri Dixit's New Look

I think studying has made me not able to sleep at night. I feel sleepy at the weirdest times. That issue aside, I adore Madhuri's look in her new movie so I figured let's start with her make-up breakdown.

Face:
Moisturize your skin with a light moisturizer according to your skin type. To make make-up last and not make it settle into pores and fine/expression lines, I'd recommend using a primer for this look. However, feel free to skip this step. Apply a satin finish medium coverage foundation to your skin in light layers. Conceal under the eyes if needed and set your make-up with translucent powder.

Recommendations: Dior Forever Foundation, Revlon Botafirm Foundation, Make-up Forever Lift Concealor, NYC Smooth Skin Loose Powder in Translucent. I would really recommend using MAC's 188 brush to apply the foundation as it gives a flawless finish and deposits light/thin layers of foundation.

Highlight:
This look has a slight glow to it and if you want to enhance that you can always add a touch of a pink-beige highlighter on the top of your cheekbones, on the bridge of your nose, and on top of your cupid's bow.

Recommendation: MAC Strobe Cream, LORAC Oil Free Luminizer in Pearl L1

Eyes:
As always, I recommend using a good primer to keep shadows from creasing or fading.

Recommendation: Ueban Decay Primer Potion, MAC Painterly Paint Pot

Brows:
Don't overpluck the eyebrows for this one and keep them groomed as as full as possible. Fill in brows with a brow pencil.

Recommendation: Milani Easy Brow Pencil

Eyelid:
If you're using Urban Decay Primer Potion as your shadow primer, I really recommend dusting a sheer veil of translucent powder over it. This really helps with blending which is otherwise difficult to do with this product. Apply a shimmery, peachy-gold shadow from lash line to crease.

Recommendation: MAC All That Glitters

Crease:
Apply a dark shimmery brown from the outer corner of the crease to just short of the inner corner. Line your lower lash line from the outer corner to the inner corner of the iris with the same shadow.

Recommendation: MAC Mulch

Highlight:
Apply a shimmery, very light beige gold shadow on the brow bone and blend slightly into the crease.

Recommendation: MAC Shroom

Liner:
Apply a thin line of black gel or liquid liner on the top lash line. Don't thicken the line too much as you go outward and always maintain a thin line as close to the lashes as possible. With a black pencil liner, line the lower lash line to the outer edge of the iris. Use a q-tip or smudge brush to blend the liner into the brown shadow.

Recommendation: MAC Blacktrack, Wet 'n' Wild H20 Proof Felt-Tip Liquid Liner, Revlon Colorstay Pencil Liner

Mascara:
Apply a generous coat of a thickening mascara on top and bottom lashes to give you as much volume as possible. If you want, apply an extra coat at the outer edges. Brush with a lash comb if necessary to get rid of clumps.

Recommendation: Cover Girl Lash Blast (I love this stuff. I know, I know, so much hype, but I got asked three times already if I was wearing fake lashes), L'Oreal Voluminous

Cheeks:
Apply a medium duty rose blush with slight shimmer lightly on the apple of your cheek and blend towards the temple.

Recommendation: LORAC blush in Soul

Lips:
Fill in lips with a a creamy medium brown-nude lip liner. Top it off with a pigmented mauve lip gloss with brown undertones.

Recommendation: Sephora Lip Pencil #115, Laura Geller Parfait Lipgloss in Chilled Maple

Great Make-up: Sonam Kapoor

I'm not sure whether it's her make-up or it's her huge smile, but I love the clean, young make-up on her. I tried the make-up out on myself and while it did look like hers, the young , girlie thing is all her own. Sad, but it's a personal grievance.

Face:
Good, healthy skin is essential to this look. I wouldn't recommend using a full-blown foundation for this look but a dewy tinted moisturizer should give you enough coverage, moisturize your skin, and let your own skin shine through. If needed, apply a bit of concealer on problem areas and blend into the foundation. Apply translucent powder to set the tinted moisturizer.

Recommendations: Aveda's Inner Light Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, Shiseido The Make-up Enriched Loose powder, NYC Smooth Skin Loose Face Powder

Eyes:
Even though the shadow is very subtle, I would recommend using a good primer to make the shadows last.

Recommendation: MAC Paints in Bare Canvas

Brows:
The brows are very natural looking for this look. Brush your brows with a spoolie brush and set them with some lash gel.

Recommendation: Maybelline

Eyelid:
Apply a shimmery peachy gold shadow on the entire lid till the crease.

Recommendation: MAC All That Glitters

Crease/Outer Shade:
Apply a shimmery coppery rose shadow on the crease and on the outer third of the lid. Extend the colour to slightly above the crease.

Recommendation: MAC Falling Star, Milani Flare

Highlight:
Apply a light, shimmery beige shadow that has a hint of gold for warmth onto the browbone and blend into the crease.

Recommendation: MAC Ricepaper

Eyeliner:
The liner for this look is very clean so I recommend using either a liquid or gel liner. Alternatively you could dip a wet brush into a black shadow and use that to line the eyes. Start from the inner corner of the eyes on the top lid, staying as close to the lashes as possible and thickening the line slightly as you get to the outer edge. Extend the liner slightly past the outer edge. Line the lower lash line and connect it with the extended liner.

Recommendations: Wet 'n' Wild H20 Proof Felt-Tip Liquid Liner, Mac Blacktrack (gel liner)

Mascara:
Apply two coats of a thickening mascara on top and bottom lashes. Comb lashes with a lash comb if necessary.

Recommendation: L'oreal Voluminous

Blush:
Apply a soft slightly coral pink blush on the apples of your cheeks and blend towards your temples.

Recommendation: NARS Portofino Multiple

Lips:
Apply a rich pink lipstick that has a coral note (to warm it up of course) and top it off with a mauvey pink gloss that has warm shimmer.

Recommendations: MAC Fresco, MAC Viva Glam V lipglass.

Great Make-up: M.I.A.

Yes, I am alive and I truly will put up everything I promised to. Let me just share my frustration for a moment before I do M.I.A.'s make-up. My car broke down, the battery is dead, and I am stranded at home. It's something of a less glorified deserted island (at least you ate the occasional coconut). So now I am stuck with my worst enemy: all the homework that needs to be done.

So as per the promise, here is an overview of M.I.A's make-up breakdown and I have also added a few product suggestions. Let me know if you have any product suggestions of your own.

Face:
I know magazine excerpts are never really reliable, but as always (I am boring and repetitive, but that's what happens when you don't have a deserted-island-bring-on-the-coconut-partay), I highly recommend moisturizing your under eyes and face with the moisturizers of your choice. Let it sink in for around 10 minutes. Apply a dewy, medium coverage foundation and blend it into your hairline, neck/jaws etc. Then spot conceal where needed. Apply powder to set the make-up.

Eyes:
As always, I recommend using a primerto make the eyeshadow last longer and be more true to the pan colour. Two of my favourite primers are Urban Decay Primer Potion and Mac Paints. I prefer the Paints because they last as long as the Primer Potion but they allow for better blending.

Brows:
M.I.A.'s brows are thick and prominent but very neatly manicured. Tweeze away stray hairs and if needed, brush your brows to place. If your brows are unruly, use an eyebrow gel to hold them in place. With an eyebrow pencil, fill in your brows using short strokes.

Product Rec: Milani Eyebrow Pencil in Dark Brown.

Eyelid:
Apply a medium mauvey brown shadow from lash line to crease.

Product Rec: Bobbi Brown Fawn Shimmer Wash Eyeshadow.

Now, apply a dark gray (with a slightly blue undertone) shade of eyeshadow with shimmer from the lashline to halfway to the crease. Blend the area where the two shades of gray meet so you have a subtle gradation of colour: the dark grey is strongest at the lashline and it becomes a medium gray at the crease.

Product rec: MAC Knight Divine.

With the dark gray shadow, line the entire lower lid. Blur the edges of the shadow.

Apply a thin line with black pencil liner as close to the top and bottom lash line as possible. Blend out both lines, concentrating slightly more on the upper lash line.

Highlight:
With a soft bone colour shadow, apply the highlight from brow bone to crease. Blend the two shadows together at the crease.

Product rec: The shimmery shade in the NARS all about eve duo Milani Almondine (this is matte, but works really well with shimmery or matte shadows).

Mascara:
Apply a single coat of lash defining mascara.

Product rec: CoverGirl Lash Exact.

Cheeks:
M.I.A.'s blush is barely there, so apply a matte medium deep pinky brown blush sheerly to the apples of the cheeks and blend towards the temple.

Product rec: MAC Blushbaby

Lips:
Apply a deep grape coloured lipstick and top off with a sheer lipgloss with a cool-toned sparkle.

Product Recs:
MAC Del Rio lipstick and Milani Innocent Crystal Gloss.

Great Make-up: Yasmeen Ghauri

I have always loved Yasmeen Ghauri (always). I was so happy to come across a breakdown of her make-up. It's such a vampy look but still understated.

The products mentioned aren't available anymore, but I have a couple of suggestions:

  • Instead of Estee Lauder's Rose Tutu blush, Milani Mango Tango dusted on very lightly. I know this is discontinued but you might still be able to find it. Another suggestion is Nars Turkish Red.
  • Instead of Estee Lauder's Silent Red lipstick, Bobbi Brown Chocolate Cherry rouge pot.
  • Instead of Estee Lauder's Gala eyeshadow duo, try Nars Blondie or Bali for a medium, matte taupe. As a highlighter colour you could try any creamy beige.
Face:
Prep skin with the moisturizer and eye cream of your choice. Let it sink if for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Apply a medium, satin finish foundation. Don't forgot to blend into the neck. Apply concealor where needed, making sure to blend the concealor into the foundation. Apply translucent powder to set the base.

Eyes:
As always, I recommend using a base to make the eyeshadow last longer and be more true to the pan colour.

Brows:
The shadows for this look are understated and require the eyes to be framed very well. Tweeze away any stray hairs and comb your eyebrows with a spoolie brush. Fill in your eyebrows where they are sparse. You can then set your eyebrows with some brow gel.

Eyelid:
Apply a neutral taupe eyeshadow from lash line to crease.

Highlight:
Apply the highlight from brow bone to crease. Blend the two shadows together at the crease.

Mascara:
Curl your lashes and apply a lengthening mascara. Yasmeen's lashes are very defined and to me she seems to have some extra clumps of false lashes, but I find that Revlon's Luxurious Lengths mascara gives me a similar effect. Be sure to use a lash come to get rid of clumps.

Cheeks:
Dust a coral blush with red undertones very sheerly from the apple of the cheek to the temple.

Lips:
Apply a creamy deep cherry red lipstick with brown undertones. Make sure that the texture of the lipstick is creamy and adds some shine. You could use a lip liner in a similar colour to deepen it.

InStyle Excerpt: How to Get Aishwarya's Waves

I was browsing around (while I should have been studying really) when I came across this scan of Aishwarya in InStyle magazine.

I haven't tried to do this myself, but hey it should prove interesting.

I just realized the picture's too small to actually read what was written, so here's what it says.

How to Style it:

  1. Create a deep side part and comb a thickening spray (like Bumble and Bumble's) through damp hair to provide curl-retaining texture.
  2. Rub a dollop of leave-in conditioner (such as Neutrogena's Silk Touch) over ends.
  3. After blow-drying hair smooth, curl one-and-a-half inch sections with a medium barrel curling iron (one option: Jilbere de Paris Ceramic Tools Nano Tech), wrapping each section downward toward the neck. When the curls cool, brush out to create a solid wave, then mist with medium hold hairspray (try Sebastian Shaper)

Great Make-up: Kareena Kapoor

It's been a while since I've done a breakdown of a celebrity's make-up so I thought I'd bring you a breakdown of Kareena Kapoor's make-up. Her make-up palette is very cool toned and compliments the undertones of her skin very well.

Prep:
Start off this look with a moisturizer and eye cream according to your skin's needs. While this picture has been airbrushed (like pretty much all other pictures), her skin looks flawless. Prepping your skin always helps in applying foundation and concealor better.

Face:
For this look, try a creamy, matte, medium-coverage foundation evenly all over the face and blend into the neck. For this look, you want to have a foundation that matches your skin perfectly. I know this is important always, but Kareena's make-up looks good because her foundation is seemingly perfectly blended and matched.

Eyes:
The colours used in this look are bright and adding a primer to your eyelids will help those colours be as vibrant as possible.

Brows:
The eyebrows help enhance the eye make-up in this look. Kareena's eyebrows aren't perfectly manicured but they are brushed into shape. You can choose to tweeze stray hairs if you wish, but be sure to groom them with a spoolie brush and lash gel.

Eyelid:
Kareena seem to be wearing only a shimmery pewter gray eyeshadow from lash line to crease

Highlight:
Apply a shimmery silver or champagne eyeshadow on the brow bone.

Eyeliner:
To line your upper lash line, you can either use gel or liquid liner, or, if you wish, dip a stiff eyeliner brush in black eyeshadow. Make a thin line along the upper lash line and thicken the line slightly when you reach the outer 3/4 of the lash line. Extend the thickened eyeliner slightly past the outer corner of the eye.

Line the inner rim of your lower lid with a black kohl pencil. For the green liner, you again have the choice of liquid, gel, or green eyeshadow and then create a thin line along your lower lash line.

Mascara:
Curl your lashes and apply two coats of volumizing mascara on the upper and lower lashes. For added drama, you can add a few clumps of false lashes on the outer corner.

Cheeks:
Apply a bright, blue toned pink, something of a candy pink I would call it, sheerly slightly above the cheekbones and blend towards the temples.

Lips:
Line lips with a rosey mauve lip pencil and top it off with a moisturizing lipstick in the same shade.

Setting Make-up:
Apply translucent powder with a large powder brush all over your face.

Great Make-up: Bipasha Basu

This is one of my favourite looks on Bipasha Basu. So here's a go at her make-up.
Prep:
Although the make-up is very dramatic and smokey, good skin will complement this look perfectly. Use a moisturizer and eye-cream suitable for your skin needs and allow it to skin in.

Face:
Apply a creamy, matte, medium-coverage foundation evenly all over the face and blend into the neck. You don't need to apply powder just yet.

Eyes:
The eye-make-up is very dramatic in this look, and if like me you have the problem of shadow always being muted by the colour of your eyelids, I suggest using a good primer to set the stage for the make-up to come.

Eyelid:
Apply a smokey charcoal grey from lash line to crease. Dot the same eye-shadow along the entire lower lash-line.

Highlight:
Apply a shimmery taupey-nude from the brow bone to the crease and blend it with the charcoal grey at the crease. With the same eye-shadow, apply a a dot to highlight the inner corner of your eyes.

Eyeliner:
With a rick black liquid liner, make a thin line along the upper and lower lash line. If you find this tricky, just place tiny dots as close to each other. Then, once you're done, even out any empty spaces between the dots.

Mascara:
Bipasha has a full strip of false lashes here. If you are comfortable with false lashes, you can apply a full strip as close to the lash line as possible. Apply one coat of a lengthening mascara to mesh your own lashes to the false lashes. Be sure to also apply mascara to the lower lashes. If you are not using any false lashes, curl your lashes and then apply a volumizing mascara generously on both upper and lower lashes. You can comb through your lashes to get rid of clumps. For added drama, you can add a few clumps of false lashes to the outer corners.

Cheeks:
It's hard to tell what she's wearing because of lighting, but it looks Bipasha is wearing dusty cinnamon coloured blush. Using a fluffy blush brush, apply the blush slightly above the cheekbones starting at the apple of the cheeks and decreasing intensity towards the temples.

Lips:
Apply a creamy mauve lip liner and top it off with a matching satin lipstick. I would recommend a liner along the lines of Bobbi Brown lip liner in Rum and Clinique Buttershine lipstick in Rum Kiss.

Setting Make-up:
Apply tranlucent powder with a large powder brush all over your face.

Looking Back at Great Make-Up: Madhuri Dixit

I thought some semi-retro glamour, in Bollywood terms, was in order and thought I'd do a breakdown of Madhuri Dixit. This clean and dramatic look is so soft and feminine to me.

Prep:
This look requires you skin to look flawless (don't they all), and properly moisturized skin forms a great base for foundation. If necessary, use a gentle scrub to exfoliate before moisturizing or applying make-up.

Brows:
Eyebrows play a prominent role in this look. Pluck any stray hairs so that your eyebrows are neat and if necessary groom them with a spoolie brush.

Face:
With a make-up sponge or foundation brush, apply a satin finish foundation with the coverage you desire. You can sheer out your foundation by using a wet sponge to apply it. If necessary, cover up any problematic areas with concealer. The final step is to blend the foundation and concealer together and into the jawline, sides of your face, neck etc.

Eyes:
Although this look doesn't require intricate shading, a primer will help make the eyeshadow stand out and last as long as possible.

Eyelid:
Apply a matte, medium taupe-brown eyeshadow from lash line to slightly above the crease.

Highlight:
Apply a satin cream-coloured eyeshadow on the brow bone. Blend both the taupe-brown and highlight so that there are no harsh demarcations.

Liner:
With a steady hand, apply liquid liner starting from the inner corner. As you approach the outer corner, start thickening the line and stop at the end of the outer corner of the eye.

Mascara:
Dramatic lashes are essential to this look, so if you feel comfortable you can apply a full strip of false lashes as close to the lash line as possible. Apply one coat of a lengthening mascara to mesh your own lashes to the false lashes. Be sure to also apply mascara to the lower lashes. If you did not apply any false lashes, curl your lashes and then apply a volumizing mascara generously on both upper and lower lashes. Be careful that you don't get clumps when applying the mascara.

Blush:
Apply an orange toned blush on the apple of your cheeks with a very, very light hand. Extend the blush away from the apple of the cheeks with an ever lighter touch. I know an orange blush might seem frightening, but a blush such as NARS Taj Mahal could help you achieve a similar look with an incredibly light touch.

Lips:

Line lips with a warm red lip liner that has golden undertones. Finish off the look with a creamy, lipstick with a satin sheen in the same shade.
