L'Oreal HIP Cream Liner in Black
Labels: Make-up Musings 12 commentsFirst of all, I had something of an allergic reaction when I heard the price. When purchasing drugstore gems, I always hope to find something considerably cheaper than high-end make-up. My semi-chance came when I got the cream liner and a HIP paint BOGOF (buy one get one free) at CVS a while back.
I have long been searching for an intensely black liner that will stay put. When I say black, I don't mean the black that those who have not experienced desi kajal talk about. I want that intense black that every desi girl knows exists and searches for in her lifetime. Lately. I have become very disappointed with my MAC Blacktrack, my Black Stila Smudgepot is more hardened than, well, my heart had become in the search for this mythical black liner, and Bobbi Brown's Gel Ink's simply aren't dramatic enough. My prayers for a HIP BOGOF were finally answered and search for the blackest black liner has ended.
What I love most about the HIP cream liner is that is stays put even on my waterline.
It lasts at least eight hours and will not budge. I don't think this is only because it's newer than my other gel liners, because even when the latter were brand new they never clung to my waterline like Shilpa Shetty to her "I'm so innocent na" image (don't kill me for this, the woman just grates).
The texture is very akin to my gel liners but it is a tad creamier. I do notice that the HIP cream liner makes a somewhat more 'jerky' line and I have to add extra effort to make the line as smooth as possible. As a result it takes a bit longer to line my eyes with this.
And now for the blackness quotient. Is there anything more wonderful than finding a liner that is the deepest, darkest black you could imagine. It's not a glossy black and doesn't have any shimmer to it. Instead, it's a feverishly sultry, matte black that doesn't look flat or dull. Most black gel liners tend to crumble on me and I get dark circles even when I don't have them (those rare, happy days...). L'Oreal's HIP cream liner does not do that, which to me makes it ideal.
All in all, this cream liner is excellent. I like it better than most of the gel liners I have. Other than the jerky application I really love it.

Hi....I am a new visitor of your blog... I bought Covergirl Perfect blend pencil crayon with very high hopes but am very disappointed... i did a smokey eye last week with this eye pencil crayon alongwith a shimmery dark pista green eyeshadow...This crayon bled to all around my eye.. Can you suggest a good drug store eye/kohl pencil? I don't think this Loreal HIP range is yet available in Australia..
I also bought Maxfactor High Definition Eyeliner pen a while back which is good but not very intense... I have hear that Inkliner from Shiseido is very good and intense among the pen style liners..Thought its very expensive in oz..All cosmetics in OZ are almost double triple price in comparison to US.. I am gonna buy lots of MAC when I visit US!! Where are your based? India or US?

Hi, I have a HiP cream liner in the purple shade, and I also really like the color and consistency, but I can't seem to find a brush that works really well with it. Do you have any recs? Oh, and I also would love to hear your picks for Kohl pencils.

I have the green shade and now I will have to try the black! Thanks for the review.

Anu ,
I so identify with everything in this post. kajal is such a staple for me , but most pencils/liners either smudge or are blackish-grey rather then that deep black.
have to mention this kajal from biotique (indian brand) it smelt of karpooram (camphor) exactly like the kajal my grandmom used to make at home but alas it smudged.
bought the smashbox cream eyeliner just sterday , will wait and see how it works.
I have to try the loreal one , but I too expect the expect drugstore brands to be considerably cheaper , though logic says if they work better and they are a few bucks cheaper , just as well.

i do like the darkness of kajal and kohl but after the reports on the ban, im not sure which to trust and which not. do you know which ones dont have a high lead content?
i weanna try out this one too, but i cannot rim my inside eyes with gel, it burns. i have really sensitive eyes and they start watering up. i usually use mac kohl pencil in engraved to line it but like you said i end up with these undereye circles that dont realyl exist!
lol
thanks

I had similar concerns after I heard about the Kohl ban, but I think that most of the pencils sold in drug and department stores in the US are fine (most are just soft pencils). But, I try to look up the ingredients for most of the products I use just to be generally safe. http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com can really help.

I know exactly what you mean, about getting a really good black liner.
I have recently been happy with 2:
MAC technakohl in graphiblack
and
AVON luxury eye pencil (it is not a twist up one, you have to use a sharpener) in very black. It goes on very smooth and intense

i'm REALLY liking the revlon colorstay pencil liner of late. I also really like the l'oreal HIP line. they have great pigmentation and the products are very good. i havent tried the colour truth pencil liners but i think they would be good considering how much good the HIP line is (I love love ;ove this line)

Anu - a bent eyeliner brush (such as the Sonia Kashuk one from Target) really really helps with the application of the HIP cream, makes it much smoother. I rave about this one much as you do - I totally love it!
New-ish to the blog, I enjoy it! Thanks for pulling this together for us South Asian ladies.
